They were only boy scouts, after all. Nothing to be scared of. But that was when she heard more sounds - another parade coming from up ahead, and yet another from the fog off to the right. They were converging.
She considered moment longer. She’d *thought* they were boy scouts; at least, they’d looked like them when she looked at them directly. But when she turned away... What she saw in her periphery was something else. And now, more we’re coming.
At her hip, the worn scabard was begging to be used.
But when she looked at them — looked at them directly — she saw only red-cheeked boys, boys who had never heard a hard word. And when one of them looked at her, he seemed to be saying, “you wouldn’t hurt me, would you?”
