And why can’t that level of difficulty be relative? Furthermore, what do you imagine the devs gain from making the game inaccessible to many players as opposed to what they’d gain by opening it up to them?

The thing is that adding difficulty options can and will and have ruined game balancing, not only that but gaming is an art form not just a play toy. It's always good to have difficulty options but not every game necessarily needs it or should have it.

And yet multitudes of other games manage to pull it off. Why does games being an art form mean they have to exclude people?https://twitter.com/docsquiddy/status/1112080134071308291?s=21 …

doc @docsquiddyFor everyone who thinks I don't understand Dark Souls and believe that adding an easy mode is "missing the point," http://thesto.mp/post/169588860967/the-one-about-dark-souls … trust me, i get it and i work harder than you to enjoy it and i should only have to work as hard as you do pic.twitter.com/EDwiqf0Lf5Pokaż ten wątek2 odpowiedzi 1 podany dalej 3 polubione -
I feel like you’re just going around in circles. You seem unable to give a satisfactory rebuttal to the idea that difficulty can be relative; easy to you is hard to others, and therefore it remains a challenging game, but we trust the player to discern the level they need.

I already agreed with you that difficulty is relative in a previous post.

Then your argument is?

Well I've clearly stated it in prior posts. I feel like you're getting mad at an opinion I don't even have. My argument is that some games are designed with a certain difficulty in mind that is, yes, relative to the player, but is still the difficulty the devs wanted it to be.

You appear to be missing the point that the difficulty the devs wanted it to be can still be achieved within an easier mode because for some people your easy mode is their hard mode...

No I get that. Like I said difficulty options are great. However not every game could work like that. Dark Souls for example is designed in ever way to be a "difficult" experience. That means level design, enemy design, literally everything would have to change for an "easy" mode

And *yet* it is doable. Other games achieve it, despite these factors. Yes, there is added cost associated to it, but it’s a cost that opens your game to a wider audience, which means more people buying the game.

If adding an easy mode is too difficult, perhaps the devs should be playing life on easy mode?

The issue is that not every game needs a difficulty option.

I have not once played Dark Souls and thought "huh I need a difficulty option" and I'm not even good at dark souls.
