Fck that. Use said. My English teacher drilled into me from a young age that, "Said is like a used condom," it sucks.
For years, my novels had arbitrary synonyms for SAID

That's so weird, I was always advised to use "said" in all but exceptional circumstances, and I'm only just starting to free it up slightly.
"Said" is great though. Readers are so accustomed to it that it barely even registers except to clarify who is speaking, which is invaluable. It's the ninja of words, stealthy and effective, slipping between the shadows to do necessary, unseen tasks.
