MCV 30 Under 30 2021 
Personally, it's more that so much writing, especially in fantasy, is male-dominated, and I'd like to see an equal amount of prominent male and female characters to represent the world as it actually is: full of dynamic, brilliant people of all genders, sexualities, races, etc.
As a woman, I do definitely feel the lack of female representation. Prominent (and well-written) female characters allow me to better relate. They fuel me to root for her. But also, many authors feel it is enough to have one woman in a sea of men, and that doesn't feel realistic.

Exactly! I was trying to say something similar, but you said it better. It needs to be realistic and believable. If there's a legit reason why there's a sea of dudes, then fine. But, if there isn't, then there should be a decent amount of female characters.

Also, a more diverse and balanced cast (token 2D characters with little significance don't count) will appeal to a wider range of people/demographics, opening up your audience. A more functional way of looking at it, but still.
