Sometimes I read posts about Firewatch, and occasionally I see "It's a very good game but I hate it". I actually really appreciate those bc the overwhelming trend these days is just to trash everything we don't like. Refreshing when ppl see value in things that aren't their jam

One of the skills I always aim to improve on is the ability to critique something without just basically requesting that work to become what I personally like. Being able to give feedback to guide a work to align more with the creator's goal is super valuable and hard to do well

This extends beyond art or games really. I used to be much more reactionary and quick to dismiss ideas and decisions that on first glance seems blatantly idiotic. Now I try to make space to ask "why" first, and am learning to be comfortable with more nuance and less dichotomy

I find it instructive to draw a distinction between the things I admire and the things that entertain me. This stands for everything from games to people. I did not enjoy Night In The Woods, for example, but I appreciate the shit out of it.
