Spaces after ellipses? 1. I use spaces both for mid-sentence pauses... and to trail off at the ends of sentences... I’m not a monster! 2. I use spaces...but only if I’ve finished the sentence... I’m not a monster!

Asking because I’ve received conflicting advice. I prefer the latter for clarity. Sometimes using spaces after ellipses mid-sentence can distort the meaning/jolt as you initially read it as two different sentences.

But I’m seeing the former more and more often now, and I see how that consistency would be favourable (despite the inconsistent capitalisation that follows

I've never seen the first way! I've certainly never used it.

Really? I don’t personally like the first way, but I’m seeing it more and more. Not surprised to see it taking the lead in this poll. Interested to hear your reasoning...

Well aside from the fact that I personally think 1 looks messy, it's also been the style at every translation company I've ever worked for. So it's hard to work out if I genuinely prefer 2 or if I'm just used to it!

One reason for that might be that translated Japanese sentences tend to be a) heavy on the ellipses despite best efforts, and b) tight on space. Shaving the spaces can be the difference between life and death* *Fitting in the translation you want and not fitting it in

Yeah, I think that’s very fair! Maybe I’ve just been conditioned to prefer it too?
