That's so shitty! I had a similar thing back when I waited tables in uni. I'd booked the day off because I had an assignment in the next day which was 100% of my module. They called me up anyway and told me they'd fire me if I didn't show.
But I needed the money so I had to do as they asked. Guess who had to pull an all-nighter? 
I shouldn't have left so much of it to the last minute, but still... Shitty!
