Can we please dispell the myth that adaptation = translation? Adaptation doesn't mean transposing a story onto a different medium exactly as you found it. It can, but it doesn't have to. It's the chance to reimagine the IP and make it your own, for better or worse!

I think they should use a different term then adaptation then. "Loosely based on x".

Disagree. To adapt encompasses the notion of change! We have words like translation for exact replicas.

to adapt is to change from something else to something, if you adapt to an environment you change to handle the environment, thus an adaptation of a book would be to make a movie represent the book?

It would be about making the story work well as a film, which can comprise any number of changes. It's very common to see adaptations of Shakespeare where almost everything has changed but the core narrative arc and the basic cast.

guess it's just my personal choice, if you make too many changes i'd rather it be called based on rather than adaptation.
