to adapt is to change from something else to something, if you adapt to an environment you change to handle the environment, thus an adaptation of a book would be to make a movie represent the book?
It would be about making the story work well as a film, which can comprise any number of changes. It's very common to see adaptations of Shakespeare where almost everything has changed but the core narrative arc and the basic cast.
guess it's just my personal choice, if you make too many changes i'd rather it be called based on rather than adaptation.
Where do you draw the line? Seems pedantic to me, but oh well. Each to their own! This is and has for a long time been how the industry itself understands adaptation. Literally what I learned on day one studying adaptation at uni :P
