I feel like so much of my life is spent looking at stuff by people I admire and thinking, “Damn, I can’t do that, why the hell am I even trying?” then levelling with myself like, “Dude, you’re 25, chill out. Keep doing what you’re doing and you’ll get there in your own time.”

Awesome! I'm approaching my first full-time Narrative Design gig and I have a few small freelance games writing gigs under my belt, so there's hope XD Although a studio I applied for a few months back told me I'd blown it by spending too long in marketing beforehand

But folks I've spoken to since then told me it sounded like I'd dodged a bullet. Good writing will speak for itself regardless of background, no?

[Good writing] + {a good work ethic} + [being pleasant to work with] + [being able to complete things] + [truly loving, embracing and understanding the medium] will speak for itself.
If any of those parts are lacking, then it'll be very difficult.
