I was a dishwasher. I was paid £3 per hour. They’d ask me to work overtime, then release me five minutes before the hour was up to avoid paying me for it. Was also penalised for being even ONE MINUTE late for work.https://twitter.com/raejohnston/status/1031761074704474113 …

That's bad! At 14 or 15 I was a dishwasher at the (probably illegal) rate of £2/h. The appeal was the cool environment, hanging out with twenty-somethings in a cafe. I'd drink more free drinks than I could have afforded with my pay.

£2 is a joke! And idk about you, but life in front of a dishwasher wasn’t cool for me — probably the sweatiest experience of my life!

It was just a sink with rubber gloves, but then later I got an (actually paying) job at a different cafe where they had one of those professional dishwashers which was hot. Luckily by that time I'd moved up to making coffee.

I remember I used to make the frothy coffees with so much froth it would tower over the cup like a little hill of milk. Nobody complained.

Tbf, I always messed up the coffee — maybe because I don’t drink it myself. But I was KILLER at arranging desserts
