Been having a think about YA fiction. Lots of people shit on it as a 'lesser' form of literature, but that's not the case at all. If anything, YA actually has more use in our society; it helps to develop and expand malleable young minds by exposing them to philosophical dilemmas.
Yeah, unfortunately there does seem to be a lot of crossover between YA and death-by-trope. I guess the genre's a bit of a goldmine so many publishers/authors may treat it as formulaic.

Oh the tropes are what kill me. It's some variation of kids movie & Harry Potter. Chosen one, morality tale, hidden world like ours, hetero love interest, best friend role, rival role, ancient war, adults not believing the kids, kids taking things into their own hands, etc

The 2 YA books I liked, Way Down Dark & Warm Bodies, focus on a few tropes and delve into them. Like Warm Bodies really explores the idea of being undead from a different perspective, & the love story is the focus of the plot & characters development, feeling genuine.
