Did anyone else with a religious upbringing get constantly pummelled with "you're a sinner, you don't deserve to be loved by God, you're lucky Jesus came to save you or you'd go to hell" rhetoric? Thinking back, that's pretty messed up and probably has a lot to answer for.

It was more of a "God is always watching you. Live your life in fear that you are doing something terrible and you'll get punished for it." It was probably a leading factor in why I suffered from anxiety so much growing up.

I find it interesting that the discourse when the Jews were under the Romans was generally "it's ok to be poor -- it's actually advantageous to be poor". Seems to work in the Romans' favour as it conditions people to accept their 'place'.
