I was once promised a promotion if I worked the role on top of my own for a bit. Six months in, they made a U-turn -- said they no longer needed the role -- so I stopped. Then a job ad went up...FOR THAT ROLE.
I didn't get it. Not senior enough, apparently.

Wasn't even interviewed, but still didn't receive an update until after someone else was already hired. Fair to say I was pissed off. Insta-quit. But it's cool because what I went on to do was way better

Moral of the story, folks: 1. If you're an employer, don't make promises you can't keep/enforce. 2. If you're an employee, don't trust verbal promises. Write everything down.

That last point is especially important. Learned that the hard way myself.

Especially since the chance employers will start listening to the first point is nearing zero... Guess it's all on us! But yeah, I imagine most people learn this the hard way like me and you.
