We isolate ourselves from the world in our little cliques, patting ourselves on the back, and respond with aggression to all who threaten our narrative as we've written it. But it accomplishes nothing. You don't change the way people think by attacking and exiling them.
Our attitudes drive away those who need to listen. If the only people seeing our arguments are those who already agree with us, what have we accomplished?!
*Of course* if you make someone feel stupid or like 'the bad guy' they're gonna stop listening, and then you've ruined your opportunity to create change. Nobody wants to be the bad guy.
I'm just as guilty of these behaviours as most people. I struggle with the intensity of my reactions when my core values are challenged, but it's something I'm trying to change. That we should all endeavour to change. Or nothing else will.
But then there's the sad truth: nobody will read this thread, and those who do probably already agree.
