That's so fun! I'm nosy because I'm attempting a bit of a sideways move into game writing, so I'm very interested in other people's game writing paths. Looks like you've been doing it freelance for a while?
Not that long, actually. About two months? But I was lucky to have lots of game writing/narrative design opportunities come my way on the side while at Jagex, for which I can only thank @JagexOsborne and @JagexOrion, among others. I got my first two credits there.
So, even though I was technically in marketing, I spent those two years making strides towards my current career. I was pretty terrified when I left to go freelance -- I wasn't sure whether my experience was enough to land me the work -- but that wasn't the case.
It's a great community; everyone helps each other out, recommending each other for opportunities and passing on work. I've also been lucky enough to receive awesome mentorship from @gregbuchanan, plus loads of useful advice and feedback from Zak Garriss (formerly Deck Nine).
That's awesome! I'm in localisation, which is very writing-adjacent, but it's hard to convince people that it counts for anything! So I'm working on building a portfolio on my own time.
Portfolio is everything. Greg and Zak always tell me to make Twine games (underway). Localisation is *so* important -- I learned that from the awesome team at Jagex: @JagexBabsi and co!
