Please don’t take this the wrong way, but the word binge used out of it’s true context can sometimes be triggering to folks with bulimia or binge eating disorder. Not always, but I know I’ve struggled in the past. Feel free to ignore, but just a heads up! (Sorry, couldn’t DM) <3

Hey thanks for saying something! Never thought of the word that way myself, we could all try to be more conscious of it <3

It’s so normalised now that I even catch myself saying it from time to time. Maybe it’s just language change in progress. The only usage that really hurt was a ten foot ad telling people to ‘go binge’. It was referring to a tv series.

That was the time that people got angry; I posted asking that companies broadcasting messages ten foot high to millions of people be a little more careful with word choices, if not for concern for others then to minimise negative connotations of the word binge affecting brand.

But loads of random normal people who were not that company took it as a personal attack on their freedom of speech. We just need more awareness so people can make their own judgements.

What you’re describing reminds me of the whole argument that forcing people to acknowledge gender neutral pronouns was “infringing” on their freedom of speech — it takes sympathy to acknowledge how words can hurt someone else and human decency to actively change your habits...

Thing is, nobody is forcing anybody. They’re just asking for a little compassion, to have their ability to self-identify recognised and validated. Invalidation is the root of so much pain.

That’s true, it’s related to the idea that telling someone what they should do often encourages them to do just the opposite. I don’t know what the right way is but talking about the pain and letting folks decide for themselves whether to recognize it is a step forward

I reckon that sounds good :) I don’t particularly want to pussyfoot around the feelings of someone who’s unwilling to be sensitive to someone else’s, but you lose their attention as soon as you get their back up.
