A militant caucus within the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers is demanding the District clean up the asbestos that has plagued its schools. An example of how rank-and-file movements can be a powerful force against environmental injustice. via

Things Pelosi didn't tear up: - the 2020 NDAA, which gives Trump a $738 billion war budget - Trump's USMCA (NAFTA 2.0) trade deal, which allows companies to challenge enviro regulations proposed by signatories - The 2017 bill imposing new sanctions on Iran, Russia, and N Korea

Bloomberg also got a ton of undeserved media boosting today, like this piece, which paints the billionaire as "encouraged" by a caucus he didn't even participate in and includes gratuitous quotes from his supporters praising him.

Can the US please once and for all set aside the chauvinistic attitude that it is the one and true arbiter of what constitutes fair and free elections?

This false claim to underdog status and folksy roots and millennial scrappiness doesn't just undergird all of Pete Buttigieg's rhetoric -- it is pretty much his only argument for why people should support him. It's all he's got.

In his memoir, Buttigieg writes about his time at McKinsey & Co. as though it were evidence of his scrappiness -- like he's all grit, flying by the seat of his pants, and not a well-paid employee of a powerful global mercenary firm whose clients include Saudi Arabia and the DOD.

Looking forward to Kenneth Roth's condemnation of a "dubious election" and "faltering democratic institutions" in Iowa.

That's what we're up against. These are the stakes. These are the options. On one side, eating each other while the rich control everything; on the other, a movement to bring a multi-racial, multi-ethnic, multi-generational working class together to eat the rich. Pick a side.

It's not just national politics. Will the US impose deadly sanctions on Venezuela? Will the occupation of Afghanistan continue or end? What about the war in Yemen? US military empire means Iowans also have "uncommon power" to shape discourse around issues that affect the world.

People resolving ties with coin flips in a caucus that could determine whether people die because they can’t afford healthcare or not, whether the occupation of Afghanistan continues or ends.

Buttigieg's "foreign policy" talk is mostly empty bromides these days, pretty difficult to parse, but he was clearer in 2018 just after he returned from a trip to Israel organized by the AJC. Here he is saying Israel is a model in national security.

Pete Buttigieg keeps inventing new ways of saying nothing at all.

"Many of the Ottumwa meatpackers are immigrants, largely of Ethiopian descent or origin — not the corn-fed farmers typically associated in popular imagination with the Iowa caucuses."

Compassionate and just working conditions for those who are bereaved and mourning shouldn't be a far-away dream, and neither should parental leave, for that matter.

I hope when people vote, they will recognize the tremendous and unjust power that's in their hands, and that people targeted by US drones, base expansions, wars and occupations don't get to vote. Here's my assessment of each of the candidates' records.

When the US has 800 military bases and five colonies, is waging brutal wars and occupations--directly or by proxy, and undermining self-determination around the world, the concept of US democracy really rings hollow, and the tremendous focus on Iowa right now drives that home.

Strange to see Iowa's political stranglehold not only over the US, but over the world, which is profoundly impacted by whoever helms the biggest military empire. The candidates have vastly different records on war and militarism, and this is so much power in the hands of 1 state.

Looking forward to the day when war mongers are not the arbiters of what constitutes a fair and just political discourse

It makes me so angry to see the head of CAP claiming the mantle of opposing the right because that organization has been soft pedaling the war in Yemen for years and boosting right wingers from Netanyahu to Modi.
