The big thing this new study shows is that prices for really standard procedures, like MRIs, don’t just vary between hospitals. They vary a lot *with in* hospitals.https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/5/9/17337134/health-care-costs-hospital-rates-insurance …

You see that on this chart, which shows the prices for a lower-limb MRI at the exact same hospital. Look at the big variation between the different color dots, which are different insurerspic.twitter.com/VrUG5luvm9

These are very likely insurers paying significantly different amounts to use the exact same MRI machine at the exact same hospital. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is something I see in my ER reporting too (and hopefully can report on when we have a bigger data set) — facility fees vary significantly depending on which insurance plan you have. Bigger plans can demand lower prices.

Anyway, this is all to say you should read this paper! The end. http://www.healthcarepricingproject.org/sites/default/files/20180507_variationmanuscript_0.pdf …

Are you just figuring this out? News flash - Medicare and Medicaid will *also* pay different prices for that same service.
-
And it’s not wrong but misleading to say that hospitals “keep these prices secret.” If a provider publicized their negotiated rates w carriers they open themselves to charges of collusion or price fixing.
-
That’s “competitively sensitive data” and sharing it w your competitors is a big no-no to the Feds.

That’s how insurance works-they negotiate rates w/in hospitals. If they negotiated a better price on mri, then they’ll charge more in premiums to consumer. This doesn’t show anything new

Great argument for an European style 'catch all' insurance with a lot of purchasing power and transparent pricing. It sets the price bar for the private insurers.

This is why hospitals don’t like to share their prices, because the hospital price is irrelevant- insurance decides what they will pay.

We knew there were variations in price between hospitals but it’s pretty astounding that price varies within hospitals as well.
