Every week I spend about 2-3 hours reading emergency room bills in our database. Today’s stand-out is a patient currently paying $4,200 for three stitches and a tetanus shot in thumb.

Runner-up bill for this week: $1,400 for a 6-month-old’s ER visit where one x-ray was taken. The family has a high deductible plan, so they’re stuck with the whole bill.

I was in a train wreck -> https://transitsleuth.com/2017/12/21/the-story-on-amtrak-cascades-train-501-derailment/ … and had an ER visit (results detailed in post) where I was eventually sent a bill for $250ish for CT scan and $250ish for x-ray. At first I thought @amtrak had intercepted them (they did try) but I eventually got em' & paid.

At this point @amtrak is working with me on paying & settling for losses. But the fact I got the bills, they couldn't bill @amtrak directly, and had to bother me about the billing was nonsense. I was busy healing anyway. To top it off however...

My insurance provider at the time decided that a train wreck wasn't a reasonable reason to visit an ER. Which I strongly disagree with still today and will continue to. Train wrecks shouldn't occur in the first place, but if they do, one damn well go to the ER ASAP!

I'm privileged and honored to be a in situation where I've had family support and a great wife that helped me while I was busted up and hurt.

Her patience has been hugely helpful, without between being unable to work and hurt, as a contractor, with insurance that was going away I could have been cast out and made homeless through this event.

In Australia, as an American I was delighted and depressed by how cheap and together they were- $100 for 6 hours, pills, eeg scan, several bags of IV hydration fluids (dehydration and fall with mild head injury)

I'll have to dig it out but $15,000 for a tetanus and rabies shot due to animal bite. I did get a glass of water with a hole in the bottom I had to clean up when it leaked. Not including ER docs bill separately, and the 3 follow up rabies shots, total $22,000.00.

Yes. I paid $2200 ded. But my insurance didn't go thru that nite my b day was wrong so I got a bill for $15,000 a week later, BUT they wrote off $10,000 & sent letter that they'd help me figure how to pay it. If they cld just write that off, why charge it in the 1st place?

I took my son to ER because I was worried that he had cellulitis on his face and I was afraid to wait until the next day to see the pediatrician. At ER, the nurse took his vitals. Doctor came in, literally didn't even touch him. Wrote a script. Out in 30 min.Drum roll: $1200!

And the doctor billed separately for $300 or so. For looking and writing a prescription. Less than a 5 minute visit.

The thumb is not where one should receive a tetanus shot. I would go for the deltoid myself.

But seriously, that’s a ridiculous amount for a 3 stitch laceration repair. in urgent care or in a clinic, it would have been WAY cheaper, but those aren’t open 24/7. I can only see about 18-20 people a day in my primary care clinic. It is a limited resource.

We do our best to offer same day access and it is hit or miss. Sometimes people call needing an appointment after we fill up for the day. we work in what we can, but sometimes have to refer them to UC or ER if it is a problem that shouldn’t wait until the next day.

Don't have the bill but I went to a clinic in a hospital for a baseline blood test with my twin. She faints. I sympathy faint. We're both wheeled to the ER, where they retake our blood samples and charge us over 1k for the whole thing, bc of the "ER stay."

I’m confused because I was billed $15,000+ for surgery but it appears I’m only going to be in the hook for $1150 plus a little more for therapy. Where’s the catch? (This is by no means a complaint. It’s too good to be true, I think)
