Had 3+ separate billings for an ER visit last year, one of which listed no items. I requested itemization, & wks later received several pages of charges over several yrs, printed in financial "code." I have a Ph.D., but could not decipher it. The US health system is a disgrace.

I wish I still had my bill but it was $14k for a burst ovarian cyst. Three hours later and they sent me home with an ibuprofen

My son had an encounter with a bat two years ago and was sent to the ER by his doctor to be treated for potential rabies exposure. The final ER bill? Nearly $15,000.

I fought two ER doctors fee bills for YEARS because my insurance company closed a month after the visits. Insurance was responsible, but it was sent to collections. It took years and countless hours/ follow up to get them to send the bills to Insurance co for payment.

They're not secret if you ask for an itemized bill, but still the problem lies more in that you are in dire need of _____ & thus go to a hospital, then get billed for stuff that you can't really argue, and are not told of any costs beforehand. So they can bill whatever they want.

Does any hospital visit really play out as: Doctor/nurse: We need to give you _____ to relieve the problem. Patient: How much will that cost? D/n: $1000 P: No thanks, I'll pass.

You’ll need a medical biller in the backend to process…but great way to gather data!
