I work in public health in Montana. This one bat-related incident caused the entire national supply of rabies vaccine to be depleted in 2008.

We had a bat in our house. You only get one chance to decide about rabies shots. If you get rabies, you die.
-
I was bit by a wild dog in Mexico & the CDC's rabies expert suggested I get treatment. I paid for one round then had to choose between paying for more or staying in Mx. I declared myself rabies free, stayed in Mexico, and WAS HUGELY RELIEVED a year later to still be alive.

My scariest: went into my bathroom and happened to peek down to see a bat IN THE TOILET. After I shrieked, ran out, went back in with a towel, I saw that it had drowned and was floating there, wings outspread.

-
My kid woke up with a bat in her room. The bat needed to be dead to test it for rabies. The suggested execution method? Drown it.

I have a raccoon story that is my daughter's favorite. She has adapted it into at least 5-6 school assignments over the year, including writing it as a ballad poem.

A bat changed my dad's life last year. He fell off a ladder trying to catch one in the house, and was laid out for a week on very strong drugs (opioids, of course). My stepmom got bit in the process and had to get a shot. They missed our daughter's birth because of it.

Wife: "there's a bird in the house but he flew in the small closet so I closed the door" Me thinks: I'll sneak inside closet and close the door behind me before turning on the lights Turns on lights, something hits me "AAAAUUGGGHH, IT'S A BAT, IT'S A BAT!!!"

Great article, but I was surprised you referenced the U.K. rabies prices without noting the context that rabies is virtually unknown here.
-
The most recent U.K. originating infection was in 1922! I’d have assumed this extreme rarity plus the short drug shelf life would have made
-
it more expensive to treat here. Surprised it’s not! And that these drugs are even available here in wide circulation.
