Not to minimize it, but it sounds like maybe it wasn’t the whole bat? Because how do you fit a whole bat into the mouth?

Also I do realize this isn’t the point of the whole story
-
Yes you are right! I should have used my 280 characters to explain that it was the bat wing that went in the mouth.

I really want to read this story but I don't think I can deal with the bat-into-mouth anecdote
-
I have a cockroach into mouth story. Doesn't have any redeeming lessons on policy though. Any interest?

Hmmm....metaphor for our times, but no. :)

Wow, I could have written that story firsthand! Two years ago, I had to get a series of rabies shots after a bat flew into my face - and my final grand total for the shots was more than $17k. It's crazy.

A few comments as an ER Doc: 1. Thank you. Rabies prophylaxis IS unnecessarily expensive in the U.S. 2. I think you focus too much on the ER cost and not enough on the pharmaceutical cost. 3. Enterprising urgent care centers should stock the vaccine - and maybe now they will!

And medical codes make it difficult, if not impossible, for mere mortals to determine what they're being charged.

This article actually clearly shows the value of the ED—it provides life saving care when others cannot or do not. To frame as an ER billing scam is unfair.

@cbonac let the record show that I predicted a bat in someone's mouth yesterday. I mean it wasn't "FL man devours bat whole, ER bills ensue" but stillThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
