Another detail is how much monthly rates went up, (in many cases over 100% higher) making insurance unaffordable for those who had it. People opted out because it was cheaper.

Higher income unsubsidized enrollees are sensitive to price changes; not real surprising that more would be uninsured as rates increase. Alternatively, they are more likely to seek group coverage. The gap will expand (fewer low income uninsured) in 2018 due to Trump's CSR action.

Unless they live in a GOP controlled state that refuses to expand Medicaid, these low income people are the people who can most easily get access to insurance thanks to ACA. Though they are probably more likely to be unaware than other groups.
