Remember the rumor that ACA mandated pet insurance?

Noooo how did I miss that?? I remember the rumor about armed IRS agents, but not pet insurance!
-
I’ll look for some sourcing. It happened.

Would be very interested in a Voxsplainer on how pet insurance works in countries that have national health systems. Does it even exist? Do people do pet deductibles/copays/lifetime limits or is that too American?
-
That question was my main takeaway from today's thread. What would a single-payer cat insurance system look like...?
-
the bigger question, of course, is whether veterinary medicine is as expensive in other countries as it is here. I have no idea but would love to know.
-
I had no idea animal hospitals were so much like human ones with complex surgeries and everything until stumbling upon an Animal Planet vet show recently and my mind is still blown (I have never had a pet)

Pet insurance is a scam. Association health plans are a scam. So yes, they are the same

The horse world is totally different. Small animal (cat/dog) insurance plans are different and vary considerably from company to company. Usually better for clients to set aside $20/month on their own.
-
Anecdotally, usage rates seem to be quite low, and most require clients to pay full costs up front, but more companies are entering the market, so they're seeing something promising there.

I'm a very risk-adverse person but even I figured pet insurance wasn't worth it for the dog we adopted at age 6. Saved up money for an emergency fund instead.
