Try Deborah Briggs, who is Chair of the Board of Directors at the Global Alliance for Rabies Control. She was an incredible resource when I got bit by a rabid dog in South America: djbriggs2004[at]yahoo[dot]com

To start, rabies vaccines have two separate iterations - one for pre-exposure and one for post-exposure. Human rabies immune globulin is similar to an adrenaline shot for severe allergic reactions - it provides a sudden burst of large volumes of antibodies for immune sys to copy.
-
There's different manufacturers for the rabies vaccine and HRIG - Novartis makes the RabAvert product ($345) Sanofi Pasteur makes Imovax ($340) - rabies vaccines, which require 4 doses - these prices are by the dose.
-
As for HIRG, Sanofi also has the Imogam product, which has a wildly varying cost due to supply restrictions and patents (to the tune of $700 -$11,000), and Grifols' HyperRAB product - despite lack of restrictions from CDC, similarly priced at $620-10,500)
-
And they're like snake anti-venom. The need is low so it's not manufactured in large volumes and most places carry either no stock or have very little on hand.
-
Sorry, thanks for reminding me to finish the thread, got a call at work. HIRG is indeed very similar to antivenom from a marketing/distribution perspective - Imogam, being reactive, is supposed to be ordered as-needed, creating ebb/flow in price relative to manufacturing.

I went to a “travel clinic” that offered it, but it wasn’t recommended for where I was going so I didn’t get it or find out how much it cost.

Are you talking about the prophylaxis treatment for rabies, or the vaccine.

This is a really good book about the scientists and (unethical) methods behind rabies vaccines. Not at all what you asked for, but still interesting!https://www.amazon.com/Vaccine-Race-Science-Politics-Defeating/dp/0525427538 …

Easy. Costs $75 and the guts to push your dog out of the way at just the right moment. Plus you get a nifty collar tag in the mail!

Veterinarian staff, zoos, animal shelters often require vaccination. Look there?
