Need explainer on this graph? Is this whole US? 9.4 million ED visits annually? There’s roughly 140 million ED visits per year in US
-
-
-
Yeah, that's odd. In the article it even says 'There are 141 million visits to the emergency room each year'
-
They said level 4 and 5 charges, whatever that means. I guess certain CPT codes. This chart is a little sloppy.
-
Hey sorry the chart isn’t clear - there are 9.4 million visits in the HCCI dataset, which is cited in the source line. But going to see if we can create a new version that is more clear.
-
Have some concerns about this data. See ->https://twitter.com/edgainesiii/status/937786880086691841 …
-
I reported CA ER numbers, but I don't know the costs or charges.
-
So the number of visits captured in the data set went down - why is that? A central question while the national number of visits to EDs continues to increase.
-
Based on the article, this report covers specific types of visits. It is possible that ACA is preventing more serious ER visits in favor if IP care, since more people have insurance.

Because visits aren’t actually flat, maybe. After some serious thought, and with respect to a great health reporter, this is the one graphic that sums up your article.pic.twitter.com/QbLGnLarpd

I despise graphs where y doesn't start at zero. It exaggerates changes

While your article is useful, I would say hospitals and not emergency rooms charge the facility fee. The headline seems to blame us when I, as a physician, cannot tell you what my hospital charges for facility fees.

This is an irresponsible and naive analysis of both the policy and medicine regarding ED usage, moral hazard, and the cost of same.

I’m curious if there is a way to compare the numbers between states that allow freestanding ERs (i.e. not attached to a hospital) vs. states that don’t? Does competition from non-hospitals reduce costs across board, or does everyone just charge huge facility fees in those states?

After the GOP budget axes part of Obamacare, expect ER visits to increase again.

Nice work. It is only by getting into this kind of detail that we can avoid being mislead by erroneous "common-sense" arguments.
