The lecture this article is based on is really worth a a watch too. Claudia Goldin is great.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kgmmPHxe1E …

Loved the piece. Could the solution to unintended consequences of paid maternity leave be to take the policy further? Maybe parental leave?

I think suggests a causation that may not be there. Some women drop out of labor force or scale back to have kids cuz they can't get ahead

Do you examine the time investment and how it varies by gender? A decent portion of the gap is accounted for by economic rent.
-
Pharmacists have pay equity, they're an interesting case
-
There is more equity in professions that have greater work flexibility. Pharmacists have pay equity since moving to a 24 hour model.
-
It's my understanding that pharmacists have the most similar pay. Given that professors have tenure and research incentives I'd think
-
Yes. But that equal pay is only since pharmacies moved to a 24 hour schedule, making any particular 8 hour shift of no extra value.
-
Didn't know that was a factor, however article states
-
According to Goldin, one of the key reasons... is that pharmacists, although highly educated, are essentially interchangeable.
-
That's what I'm referring to in terms of economic rent

There were some analyses in HBR that suggest this is dependent on sexual orientation. Straight women get a bigger gap, lesbians get a bump.

Read Claudia Golden on the gap as she's studies it at Hartford for a couple decades.
