        In the Netherlands, all insurance firms are privately owned but healthcare is mandatory and universal. They make billions in profit.

        Maybe US insurance companies have finally realized that accepting single payer is better then no payers with a system run by gov.

        It would be profitable for them, for pharmaceutical industries and for hospitals and doctors because they are all corporate entities.

        The reason the GOP in particular resists the idea is because they see it as socialism and realize government and corporations have to pay.

        ... but most of the coverage for poor people would have to come from the government through expansion of medicaid and similar programs.
