Sarah, if you’d like to speak with one of the case managers at the Patient Advocate Foundation, this is what they do every day (or try to). Happy to talk.

That'd be great! Want to drop me a note and we can figure something out? sarah@vox.com

I don't have the bill anymore, but it was $800 for what ended up being dehydration. I called and asked why it was so expensive, and they said if I paid immediately with a credit card on the phone they'd drop it to $200. I didn't even ask for it to be reduced. This was 2005

is that something you can even do?

How about hospitals that refuse to bill the patient’s health insurer and attempt to recover additional funds if there is a possible lawsuit? I would love to discuss this with you.

I have negotiated down charges after child birth if that counts. I used my lack of choices as arguments as to why I should not have been charged for this and for that and for out of network doctors and lactation consultants etc who do not identify themselves as optional.

My 20 yr old in college while still covered under my plan went to ER. I forget what bill was (maybe $800) but I had her fill out financial hardship form. Her income was zero, and She’s not my dependent as far as bills. She asked for it all to be forgiven. It was.

Looking forward to this story, as my son’s recent visit is currently under Quality Department review. We were just talking about whether to pay the current bill or negotiate it. As it pertains to quality of service, do you plan to look at mis-diagnoses or rushed treatment?

I don't have my letter/bill any longer, but my son went to the ER in 2013 for nurse maid's elbow. It was a 5 min appt (doc flexed his arm and quickly fixed). Bill was nearly $1k as it included all the standard charges. I wrote to the ER, asked for a review, they cut it in half.

Wait till tax season. Call and tell them you received your return and can pay them half the amount if they’ll negotiate the balance.

My wife and I just went through with this - we had a $4k bill for my son going to the ER and getting an X-Ray. Called and asked if there was anything they could do...they dropped it by 25%. It's still way too high but it's something.

I find that living in Europe helps with these sorts of fees.

don't pay it, wait the 7 years (really 4.5) for it to fall off your credit report

Would you count a paid-on-time discount that isn't widely circulated as being available?
