I’m back from maternity leave! But when I was on maternity leave, I ended up in the emergency room. And I wrote a bit about that experience in today’s edition of VoxCare.https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/9/21/17887692/voxcare-surprise-er-bills-senate …

It is shocking how terrible a breast infection can make you feel - it's like the flu! I can't wait to read all your takes on maternity care. As a maternity nurse I love to hear how patients REALLY feel about how we are doing!

I will say my nurses at the hospital were *amazing* and by far the best health care professionals I've worked with. It was the care after leaving the hospital that didn't work as well for me.

That said, obviously we need to take care of the billing problem. If the hospital is in U network, no one who works in the ER should be able to bill you out of network. This is just another way for providers to over-bill We often forget: providers R a big part of the problem.

Let me add, I don't know your ObGyn, but in general, I think many of our problems with ER's (from long waits to unexpected bills) are caused by docs who send us to ERs unnecessarily. Often it's just easier & quicker for the doc--but it's rarely easier & quicker for the patient.

Sarah- I am sorry. I just think your doc over-reacted by sending you to the ER & suggesting that you might need an abscess for a scan. Med. Lit tells us that an abscess resulting from an infection while breast-feeding is v. rare. Often doc needs to try 3 or 4 antibiotics.
