Taking a break from my break to tweet this, an inestigation that started out as a cute trademark story and quickly spiraled into a jaw-dropping hellhole of how SEO can reshape culture

Please look forward to sober, much-needed opinions such as "I still hate my Tamagotchi" and "I don't know why Golduck is called Golduck when it's blue"

I've thought many times over the past year, "This is my favorite thing I've written." I'm really proud of the work I've done at the Verge, and I'm excited to continue that work at NYT.

Note: This is why I carry two forms of ID when going to court. It’s actually come in handy when I was getting hassled before 😬

Anyways when I first got into reporting I dyed my hair bright pink and wore moto jackets in the courtroom. “What are you gonna do, piss off a judge?” lol yea why not 😎

Probably the story that bothered me the most was from a black woman defender who said that she didn’t know if she could both wear her hair naturally and be as effective of an advocate. Impossible decisions.

There was even a story going around (not sure how many degrees of separation by time it got to me) of a lawyer who got sent out of the courtroom until she came back in a skirt Me: But that can’t be legal Older woman lawyer: *shrugs* What are you going to do, piss off a judge?

2014: I was told it was best practice to wear a skirt in conservative jurisdictions, again because “you never know”

In that context, using "partner" to describe your heterosexual spouse sounded strange, awkward, even a little forced — a purposeful and political act. Times change, I guess, and in this respect, they changed for the better.

but also this was over a decade ago and in a time before Prop 8 even passed — let alone Windsor, Obergefell, etc

the first straight person I ever heard use the word "partner" to describe a S.O. was one of my philosophy professors — radical, feminist, and very french — and it made me do a double-take on the othering of same-sex relationships
