Can I hear more of your thoughts on this?

If the trial date had been set two months later, it might have been a completely different trial.

You should really really write an article with your reflections on how cautious Waymo was and nobody really understood how important it was at the time in the public forum
-
This kind of thing is really your speciality and I would love to hear it from your perspective. It would be a real winner.

Fun fact: Waymo folks show up at the safety engineering conference I've gone to three out of the past four years, which is put on by the MIT lab headed by the woman whose research drives Boeing's safety program. Uber folks don't.
-
Waymo Gets It, and are driving for Level 4 autonomy as a result. I read the NTSB report from the Uber crash this morning and it was *textbook*. I'd love to see a report presented using Prof. Leveson's analysis technique at the conference next year.
-
Since this is getting retweets, some further reading. Prof. Leveson's book: https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/engineering-safer-world … The STAMP Workshops (the conference): https://psas.scripts.mit.edu/home/stamp-workshops/ …

(Uber self-driving folks! Call me!
I'll hook you up!)

I saw a talk at I/O 15 where they said their earlier experiments with highway mode cars had shown people lose focus when supervising a car, hence the pivot to full autonomy as a goal.
-
Nobody in aviation would be surprised. Highly trained pilots have gotten worse at taking over a suddenly disengaged autopilot over the years. With random fools from the general population the issue would be way worse.
-
Is this even a fair assessment? The autonomous system saying "engage emergency stop, imminent collision in 2-4 seconds" is a fast reaction time to ask for any human over the course of hours of travel.
-
Fair. The point is that as the quality of the system rises, the less prepared drivers will be to take over. A decent system might have the driver paying half attention, but a great system might have the driver on their phone or even asleep.

Uber's actual motto is "Drive fast and kill people"
