Agree with you on disenfranchising voters as top problem, but don't undererestimate the threat of coercion that exists from unsupervised voting. Subtle coercion from partners and parents and ... It's a real issue that will get worse as unsupervised voting becomes the norm.

And disagree with
@umbernhard if you want, of course, but dismissing him out of hand would be a mistake, he's studied voting for a good bit and worked on critical recounts.2 réponses 0 Retweet 0 j'aime -
Solving voting is incredibly difficult. Vote-by-mail is interesting in many ways, but looked at with significant concern by a number of voting security folks. Not outright dismissal, just concern. Not a panacea.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Computer security is hard in general, but voting system security is by far harder than any other area I've ever worked in. Fundamentally conflicting requirements coupled with maddeningly complex implementation and operational issues.

I agree it's not a solved problem but neither are passwords or 2FA or really anything at this point

It reminds me a lot of opposition to biometric unlocking or, the trend away from SMS — sure, some of these things are problematic or "less secure than Y-solution" but these so-so solutions gives a serious advantage (or the loss creates a serious disadvantage) to a lot of people

If "better" systems lock out the people with least, then they are not better systems.

I'm not saying it's the wrong solution, only that it's complex and full of tradeoffs. Universal vote-by-mail can erode ballot secrecy in readily coercive ways, for example.

Certainly, but going straight for "harmful for democracy" when we saw what happened with on-site polling in 2016 is a real ding-dong statement

When did I say that? In any case, I would be more comfortable with making a range of voting options available, including widely expanded early voting and absentee ballots for anyone who wants one, rather than universal default vote by mail.
