It reminds me a lot of opposition to biometric unlocking or, the trend away from SMS — sure, some of these things are problematic or "less secure than Y-solution" but these so-so solutions gives a serious advantage (or the loss creates a serious disadvantage) to a lot of people

If "better" systems lock out the people with least, then they are not better systems.

I'm not saying it's the wrong solution, only that it's complex and full of tradeoffs. Universal vote-by-mail can erode ballot secrecy in readily coercive ways, for example.

Certainly, but going straight for "harmful for democracy" when we saw what happened with on-site polling in 2016 is a real ding-dong statement

When did I say that? In any case, I would be more comfortable with making a range of voting options available, including widely expanded early voting and absentee ballots for anyone who wants one, rather than universal default vote by mail.

Sure. Voting has all these problems and more, combined in ways that make them harder. And then add in decentralized control and political and legal constraints.
