i was just taking about this yesterday with someone i think this is a really bad trope that legacy publications (including NYT) can fall into if you cover all new things with the bemused detachment of an old you alienate reasonable and intelligent audiences

i think this one is particularly bad because it just hearkens back to 1990s criticism of violent video games and loud music! we've seen this before, we can do it better now

i would just add that Simon Parkin has been writing about games at the new yorker for a long time and has been doing a great job so it's not like they don't know how to do it!
