comparing any video game to the opioid crisis is ludicrous, but to compare it to a game where no one has died from playing it for 36 hours straight? smh

nothing counts as a game craze until there's a national tv channel dedicated to it

i was just taking about this yesterday with someone i think this is a really bad trope that legacy publications (including NYT) can fall into if you cover all new things with the bemused detachment of an old you alienate reasonable and intelligent audiences
-
i think this one is particularly bad because it just hearkens back to 1990s criticism of violent video games and loud music! we've seen this before, we can do it better now
-
but also if it's so ubiquitous there's no need to go at it so bemusedly, it's like approaching grilled cheese sandwiches with bemusement

-

-
yah it's not like it's Harper's or some shit

Personally, I am still recovering from the potent trifecta of beatlemania, opioid crisis, and tide pods

Agreed! And the New Yorker even HAS a video game critic (Simon Parkin) who is consistently excellent.
