and then the "blockchain tech" people are, "okay, well, the elephants might be a bust but have you seen how efficient the horses are in comparison?? we're improving all the time"
But how do we bust the processor monopoly? I'm just, like I've been following all of this but as part of the sex worker community we're trying to get practical advice out of all this, cause we're really suffering under banking discrimination (like, all sex workers, inc educators)
Both ways seem so bleak, with these tech dudes, but like, for a while backpage was taking payments again, you know? it was working for us, better than nothing.
yeah, it's absolutely a big problem that needs solving. i think the problem is you can't count on capitalists to help you, and you especially can't count on cryptocurrency capitalists because they're too busy reaching into your pocket while you aren't looking
the ambition (at least stated) to help the unbanked with bitcoin seems to have evaporated really quickly once the powerful crypto types realized the best way to get rich was to stop ordinary people from using it
I mean, it's not like that was in a total vacuum, i was there for some of the discussions at the internet archive about their credit union (i was briefly a member) and their stated positive attitude on bitcoin is exactly what got it killed by costs of insane regulatory scrutiny
meanwhile companies like square (grievances i have with sv aside) are making the point-of-sale experience with regular credit cards way better, not to mention that google pay & apple pay are pretty comfy to use so the goal posts are sprinting away from the cryptocoiners
it's wild because theoretically this space is ripe for change but people just keep building slightly nicer things on top of a completely whacko jury-rigged house of cards, and somehow this works way better than any of this "MATH IS INFALLIBLE" failmoney
ACH is still so scary! Every time I get like, my landlord's account and routing number to pay rent? But somehow crypto manages to be even scarier than that
also half the shit they're talking about now isn't even actually decentralized or public ledger ~oooh i put some encryption on a database~ now it's a crypto gtfo
you can't just put encryption on anything and call it "crypto," it's like that tweet about the british and "pudding"
By cryptocurrency logic tweets are a cryptocurrency because twitter encrypts data at rest lol
iMessage is crypto
