Lindsay Graham just asked the first good question today and i'm kind of mad about it

The mistake Graham makes is presuming that Facebook is about providing a value to its users as customers. Instead it should be seen as ensuring humane treatment for your animals that go into your meat pies.
-
For all the online platforms (twitter included) - we are the product they are selling - or we make the product they are selling (relationships for datamining).

I'd guess that the closest related model we have is probably a credit agency? They collect personal information (financial vs other) on people who aren't their "customers" (random businesses vs advertisers).

Not true. There used to be Friendster and MySpace (before it became a music gossip site). Which is why Graham is on point: Ford and Chrysler are out of business, so it's buy a Chevy or walk.

i disagree. i actually think graham makes a good point. if you, like me, have objections to facebook, what are the alternatives? as someone living that reality: there aren't any.
-
What does FB provide you that G+ or Twitter can't? Anniversary reminders?
-
people who actually use the events, logins to various sites and games that only take facebook, a user base, a site your racist uncle will use, etc
-
also all the other ones suck balls too in the pejorative sense and theres no true good alternative to any of them
-
except maybe mastodon but it circles back to getting users on it

I would say Orkut was, before Google killed it. It's problem was not having many US users.

The biggest question is how much did those rogue posts actually INFLUENCE their recipients. Were minds changed? Advertisers want to know.

Doesn’t twitter come close enough? You don’t build as detailed a profile, but you interact within a social network. Why not just say they’re the competition?
-
because you can't switch from one to the other and get the same service. because who's on there is an integral part of the product. people get facebook accounts because their friends are on there.

But he then pushed on to... Twitter? That seemed to undermine any point. Zuckerberg mentioned major companies as competition, not Twitter.

But the fact that MySpace died, and no-one else has managed to come up with a competitive product is not actually FaceBook’s fault.

I wonder if Zuck and Acme Man can describe the actual competing piano company then.
