There's a ton of white men telling me that there's a cultural sensitivity issue here or that it's dangerous (lol) to have a white husband. I did a sanity check with a woman who's a Chinese national. It's not far off from Korean culture: this is a non-issue, y'all are gullible

"verify that there are children in the home" -- if you're focused on anything else you're buying into an abusive derail of what harm was actually caused here and what kind of accountability is called for.

Has she offered any evidence that Vice promised not to write about *anything*? Since that's not standard journalistic practice, that's the part (to me) that requires proof. I can absolutely believe she assumed that was the case, but - as you noted - journalist != PR flack.
-
Here's her tweet with quotes from the email which don't seem to be made up since Vice have never corrected her, and she's asked them to: https://twitter.com/RealSexyCyborg/status/980923329606443009 … Reads like Vice agreed to not write one thing and let her assume both. To me that puts both parties in the wrong.
-
To me, those excerpts lay out very specifically what Vice agreed to do: "obscure where you live, or anyone in your life." What part of the profile fails to do that?
-
You don't see how "I have to avoid discussing family, orientation/relationship" and a reply of "I completely understand" could be construed as "I understand you have to avoid those topics in this interview"?
-
Again, there's a difference between the profile (what Vice writes) and the interview (what she talks about). The interview informs the profile. Vice agreed not to talk to her about those things, not to not write about them.
-
Right. Naomi was excited about the interview and article leading up until February. When the interviewer decided to ask Naomi (and her friends) about her marital status "before publishing"
-
I agree the profile itself is separate and they could have covered the topic in the profile. But it seems deceptive to agree not to ask that, then plan to ask it last minute (seemingly since the author no longer needed Naomi's cooperation)
-
It's deceptive if they planned to wait until the end — it also may have just come up organically at that point. There's really no way to tell. I thought the way it was asked was very solicitous (agreeing to drop it if she wanted), but they did broach their agreement not to ask.

From this "kerfuffle" I've learned
@vice burns sources and interviewees, cannot be bothered to adhere to agreements. Are you really defending them by whatabouting? -
asking a question is not "burning a source," neither is writing a profile that's not 100% fawning
-
I disagree. Burning the source by covering items specifically flagged and placed off limits as dangerous to them prior to the interview is not "asking a question". The spin you're trying with that cast is troubling
-
On no planet do sources get to dictate what is included in a final piece. Unless they hired a PR firm, that is.

Here's a primer on the differences between PR and journalism http://www.proi.com/Public/ArticlePDFs/91/Journalism%20and%20Public%20Relations.pdf …

Vice said they understood why someone wouldn't want to answer a question, did not realize (because it wasn't clearly stated) that the source thought this meant they were agreeing to let her dictate the terms of their coverage

Vice wasn't wrong to breach topics that Naomi clearly stated were off-limits in order for her to participate in the piece? Let's clear this up. Are you okay with what Vice did because of the "nature of profile pieces"? Or is it because they actually didn't do anything wrong?
-
She's ok with what Vice did because they are her friends.
