WAYMO: It says, “Going slower is NOT an option anymore.” You said that? TK: It sounds like something I would say.

"TK ... wants AL to allow us to leapfrog" WAYMO: And leapfrog is jumping over someone else, right? KALANICK: Well, yes, I guess. WAYMO: And you’re talking about Google. KALANICK: Um. I don’t know about them.

WAYMO: You remember you had an interview [with Bloomberg], didn’t you? TK: I do.

WAYMO: Isn’t it true that the interviewer from Bloomberg asked you when you reconnected with Levandowski? KALANICK: I don’t remember. WAYMO: Turn in your binder to TX 107.

WAYMO: And you told Bloomberg you reconnected with Levandowski after he got Otto up and running. You don’t dispute that? KALANICK: [waffling] I don’t remember TED.

WAYMO: Do you think the reporter is lying? Line of questioning gets shut down because then they'd need to bring in the reporter etc

In any case, they got Kalanick to admit that he said Levandowski was like "a brother from another mother," which TK admits he's said "many times."

Uber is now questioning Kalanick. An agreement between the parties allows them to question him on the full scopes, so essentially they're doing their direct of Kalanick right now.

First objection from Verhoeven (leading question) Alsup takes a moment to explain the objection to the jury so that they're not prejudiced. Explains that Verhoeven can phrase his own questions in a leading way (hostile witness) but Kalanick is allied with Dunn (Uber).

UBER: To what extent was Anthony Levandowski hired in order to get Google’s trade secrets? TK: To no extent at all.
Afficher cette discussion -
TK: We hired Anthony because we felt he was incredibly visionary, a very good technologist, and he was also very charming.
Afficher cette discussion -
TK: And we wanted to not just understand how all the technologies could be put together to make driverless cars a reality but having a vision what that means for cities.
Afficher cette discussion -
TK: How that changes the way cities work, and couple that with the ride-sharing system. He had a vision for how to make that work that was really compelling. So that’s why we hired him.
Afficher cette discussion -
UBER: How do you feel about him now? TK: Look. this has been a difficult process. He had some… This makes it not as great as what we thought at the beginning.

First emotion Kalanick shows is when lawyer asks him about the founding of Uber and what being CEO was like.

His voice quavers a little, "Imagine six people behind a table and that’s your whole team. Day in and Day out you dream what Uber could be."

TK: I's not just team of six, you have thousand people in 30(?) major cities and your job goes from being a team of six to being in the trenches and empowering thousands of teams of six.

Around 2013 Larry Page and Kalanick had a meeting where Page came and picked him up in a self-driving car, they began to think of a partnership. Google invested in Uber. Kalanick did not think of Google as a competitor.

UBER: What was the relationship between the two companies at the time? KALANICK: It was kind of like little brother with the big brother. It may be kind of hard to grok right now but at the time Uber was a couple hundred employees, kind of small.

UBER: During [discussions with AL], did you ask Levandowski to bring Google information to Uber? TK: I did not. Ever. UBER: At any point in those discussions did Mr. Levandowski tell you he was going to bring Google information to Uber? TK: He did not.

UBER: Apart from the allegations that Google made in their complaint have you ever heard from any person the allegation that Levandowski downloaded files to bring to Otto and then to Uber? TK: Never.

TK: When you acquire something you do acquire the developed intellectual property of the company you acquire. UBER: Why?
Afficher cette discussion -
TK: That’s part of the acquisition. So at the time of the acquisition they had autonomous trucks that were going up and down 280. I got to take a couple rides in that. Yeah. It was fun.
