This is when police come to your door weapons drawn because someone says you are a dangerous? That happened to me once

In particular, it's when someone tries to convince an armed assault team that if they don't bust in on you guns blazing, hostages will die. So they do. And they shoot you if ANYTHING looks even SLIGHTLY off, at any time, to any cop. Facts be damned, and no consequences.
-
And they usually shoot your dog right at the start even if they don't shoot you, because dogs bark, and barking is "scary".

Even in Canada the idea is ridiculous.
-
We've had instances of swatting in Canada so not that ridiculous - tho' I don't recall any deaths by swatting, so maybe there's that
-
Yes, that is the point. The police will check it out but be far less likely to just open fire.

An awful lot comes down to Posse Comitatus. In most countries, the military can be called in if the police are unable to handle a situation. Because of that, police don't have military gear. But because of Confederates' hurt feelings over Reconstruction, we have paramilitaries.

Gun ownership is a major factor here (& why SWAT teams are used more frequently in the USA than Europe). E.g. the Wichita hoaxer said he was holding his family hostage at gunpoint, a scenario that's very plausible in the USA but not in countries where scarcely anyone owns a gun.
-
Before that happens there will be a long negotiation with the hostage taker and a SERIOUS assessment of the situation. That a officer in one of this team is trigger happy is basically IMPOSSIBLE.

Sounds like Police is heavily overreacting as well as a society problem. From Germany here. When I heard about it in the news I was really shocked that police is reacting so unreflected. People need to start care again about the effects of their doings.
-
yeah, I couldn't imagine it here in Germany either (Australian expat), but in turn, i wonder how the criminal justice system dealing with cyber crimes in general. I remember a friend got a death threat via FB in Aus and the cybercrime unit officer admitted she'd never used FB.

Europeans have SWAT teams and elevated police alertness due to terrorism and right-wing views among their police, so they’re at most three years away from this happening to them.
-
There is a highly different training in term of response to an incident. Putting hands at your waistband would not end up as getting shoot

For info as UK law enforcement I've dealt with several. Main difference IME being, in general the 'call' is via a faked social media threat rather than spoofed number or VOIP call.
