Women keep asking me if anything will actually change after Weinstein. I always say yes, if only because infosec, of all fucking things, has changed.https://www.theverge.com/2017/12/21/16807116/infosec-community-sexual-predators-weinstein-assault …

Cynically, I wonder how much of the difference is due to being mostly visible in the US scene against being active in the European scene
-
I also wonder tbh
-
I also also wonder whether race and gender of abusers/abused had to do with ability to believe? Not sure. Not my community, as such.
-
It's hard to believe it didn't not play a role but I also think there are too few data points to draw conclusions. JA was a missing stair on top of it all, I heard almost universally from people in the US that they had always thought MMB was a good guy.
-
And as for Captain Crunch — both women and men alleged misconduct re: JA, so I'm conflicted on how gender breakdown of victims changed things. I just don't know.
-
I am tempted to read patterns of privilege into all of these factors but when I think it out, there's just a lot going on.
-
Yeah - not enough cases to know for sure, but one can have fingers crossed these patterns of belief in the future...

Are we maybe moving past the general idea in hacker-space that it's a funny joke to fuck over the less-capable, to break their things and take their shit, and we should all just accept it because Being On The Internet inherently makes you a target for everything?
-
When I joined the mostly text based internet decades ago, this pirate attitude was definitely dominant. Newbies, regardless of gender, were frightfully abused and exploited. Then ridiculed for being stupid.

Interesting to see draper mentioned. I can remember him trying to get me back to his hotel room for a "energy workout" when I was working the slashdot booth.
-
He was kinda active in the psytrance community for a while in the early 2000s, and his behavior was always a big problem.
-
Yeah, that would make sense. He really liked the early linuxworld community booth for that, a number of 20-something males said similar things.

Here is hoping that the community adopts a new ethos, that it is weak to attack those who have not consented and are therefore unwary.

the people who've replied to this post on the website show very clearly that nothing has changed. They refer to it as a 'witch hunt'. I understand you're sick and tired of thinking/writing abt abuse. aw poor thing. Pretty sure it's far more tolling on the wmn who experience it.

Also to state the infosec community "fixed" this issue by outing some of their own is completely ridiculous.

I take issue w the argument that no diff exists btwn men & wmn that make men more prone to sexual misconduct bc they're given a pass. That's completely overlooking the fact that 90+% of sex offenders are men. This isn't bc wmn aren't not getting a pass.

4 that argument 2 b valid, you'd have to show that both genders engage in sexual misconduct to an equal extent and it's only men who are given a pass hence why men engage in sexual impropriety and women don't. There's no evidence to show that at all.
