I know there isn't much info in here to work off of. But let's just say I take a keen professional interest in this.

If it's 2001, are we thinking phished email credentials, compromised devices, physical surveillance / being tailed and monitored by a PI, or just a leak at New York magazine?

if it was 2001, then MSN/IM chat hacks / log pilfering was super popular. also super easy to get into and operate. I can't imagine they dabbled in regular hacks/trojans. I'd also say phishing is a nay. otherwise: physical/dumpster diving.

I'd guess physical surveillance given that we're talking 2001

Isn't an explanation that W had a mole, ie editor/friend @ NY mag? Reading him draft copy, etc

Covert entry team or paid someone close to him (a cleaner etc) perhaps to go through it. Common enough practice for a private intelligence company to do it on such an investigation - has happened to NGOs etc. Usually they outsource it to keep it at arms reach.
