I don't think The Internet of Garbage is completely on point in 2017 but it's held up *alarming* well — an indictment of the platforms

When I finished the book, I honestly believed it would be irrelevant in a year. Part of me wondered why I had embarked on the project at all

I wrote only a passing description of large-scale orchestrated harassment campaigns, believing they would occur at the same rate as before
Afficher cette discussion -
I described some disinformation, some bot-like tactics, I talked a little bit about how humans in those situations behave like botnets
Afficher cette discussion -
In the time since, some of the dynamics I described turned into mainstream politics

I believed in 2015, that the industry was on the cusp of change. I don't think I was wrong. The industry went right to the cusp.. and failed

As
@unburntwitch acknowledged last night at Powell's, there are many genuinely good people at tech companies trying to do the right thingAfficher cette discussion -
They are often disempowered, pushed out, or get burnt out. Or, worse: they get promoted, co-opted, and absorbed into the institution
Afficher cette discussion -
I don't think it was predestined that the tech companies would fail with harassment.
Afficher cette discussion -
There are many non-financially-motivated policy decisions that tech companies make, policies being pushed from the inside by true believers
Afficher cette discussion -
You only have to see the accelerated advances in end-to-end encrypted messaging, HTTPs, etc after Snowden. Apple's stand against the FBI.
Afficher cette discussion -
Some people talk about how consumers became "wary" of tech after Snowden, that these were pure economic decisions. Bullshit.
Afficher cette discussion -
Apple vs. FBI drew almost an even 50/50 approval/disapproval split when nationally polled
Afficher cette discussion -
Most consumers aren't aware that WhatsApp and iMessage is e2e, and HTTPS was incredibly *difficult* to roll out almost everywhere
Afficher cette discussion -
These were good decisions beneficial to consumers, that were rolled out because of ideology in the rank-and-file of tech
Afficher cette discussion -
There's an alternate timeline very close to ours where tech did not fail catastrophically with harassment.
Afficher cette discussion -
Of course, the platforms were never going to get rid of *all* harassment or prevent *all* of the future g*mergates.
Afficher cette discussion -
But failure has been catastrophic, the cancer has metastasized into a national political problem that might literally kill us all lol /end

They literally don't benefit, it's a bullshit shareholder metric that doesn't mean anythinghttps://twitter.com/stopTDV/status/914907131740082176 …

Maybe not irrelevant. The platforms that have been the worst with harassment are also the biggest, and are publicly traded.
