I bet there's some crazy legacy technical debt to Twitter's infrastructure that's preventing it from implementing tweet edits
-
-
Historically at least, that wasn't the case. Just tweet ids were distributed around. I suspect the problem is more re: bait-and-switch.
-
i.e.,what's the correct behaviour around retweets & likes that are subsequently edited?
-
Tweet indisponible
-
Yup, exactly. Copy vs ref would help there, but originally we didn't do that. Having a "supercededBy" flag on a tweet might be a way forward
-
... but existing infrastructure would be horrific to migrate to ensure everyone saw the same thing.
-
I mean, we obviously thought about this early on, but it was a Hard Problem even then, when Deployed Infrastructure wasn't an issue.

I've messed with the API a bit. Even deleting just sends a delete msg out that clients can ignore. Keeping track of edits wld be a nightmare
-
Probably... I mean, maybe a more knowledgeable engineer than I or who knows the backend could work something out :)
