Seems to cheapen American slavery, while simultaneously imposing a US-centric worldview w/o attempting to grasp systems on their own terms

Calling it slavery is not equating it to chattel slavery in US. Far as I can tell, this is a straw man the slavery apologists are pushing.

It seems like many of the class/hierarchical forms of servitude in Asia are more culturally complex than "I own you 'cuz you're different."…
-
This is correct. Partly "brainwashed to feel this is your position in society" and partly "escaping will get you shunned"
-
So it's more on-the-surface-seems-consensual but it's way more complex than that.

Yeah there's a vast difference between an individual being enslaved and an entire population being drafted into hereditary slavery.
-
This is also a part of why, for instance, the slavery that existed in W. Africa isn't comparable to the systemic slavery of the US.
-
And also not comparable to the simultaneous murderous French and Portuguese colonial slave trade or exploited labor of indigenous Americans.

That they used Eudocia as slave is not anachronistic but product and symptom of this class formation rooted in shifting colonial economics
