I think in the long term it would need 2 or 3 mega instances a la gmail and yahoo

I think there's a point where there's too many instances but given how much activity there's been on GitHub I think the dynamic is changing

E.g. the issue with follower counts, discussion of making accounts more portable across instances, etc.

To be clear I think it's unlikely to kill Twitter, but it's silly to make predictions based on malleable features of the moment

Open source is a double edged sword but in this case the software has proved to be much more agile than Twitter's while dysfunctional mess

If necessary some amount of centralization can occur to fix problems (like follower counts) without making it a mess like Twitter, too

Yeah, being able to port followers would really make the whole thing a hundred times less complicated for users

also uncharted territory. You could always move your email address book, but changing your entry in other people's address books is tough
