watching a house judiciary committee hearing about, uh, the effectiveness of PACER and reps are issuing fiery speeches about the Muslim ban
-
-
THERE WE GO, now Conyers is talking about the 9th Cir's livestreaming of the Muslim ban oral arguments.
-
Although Conyers acknowledged that Justice Kagan and others have said cameras in the courtroom are bad,
-
he said efforts like the livestreaming of the Muslim ban appellate arguments promote greater respect of the rule of law.
-
Now a witness is shitting on PACER and wow this judiciary committee hearing is giving me life
-
said no one ever, before
-
"First, fees need to be removed as soon as possible" yes queen
-
And we're back to denouncing Trump.
-
Statement of
@zittrain now being placed into the record, in which he recommends making PACER freely available -
Now asking if it's even possible to make PACER totally free, hard to say because its finances are so opaque.
-
Now we're talking about cameras in the courtrooms.
-
The only way this hearing could be more relevant to my interests would be a discussion of open wifi in courtrooms
-
Nadler now asking a very leading question (which, like, that's every committee hearing) about how streaming the 9th Cir arguments are good
-
Good for democracy, rule of law, respect for the judiciary, etc
-
Millions of people heard the audiostream for themselves and could form their opinions, aside from the president's angry tweets
-
I think it's awesome that so many people showed interest in listening to an appellate hearing.
-
I think the reps here are right that this transparency is ever more important when the judiciary is under attack.
-
Goodlatte is focusing on judicial ethics and disciplining judges, def no fiery speeches about how Donald Trump is destroying democracy
-
He's concern-trolling about whether the judiciary's independent disciplinary process is adequate PERHAPS NOT THE BIGGEST ISSUE RIGHT NOW LOL
-
there's some pretty concerning text and subtext in this hearing
-
Now we're discussing privacy and sensitive information in livestreaming. Witness says that trial judge should have discretion
-
The State of Massachusetts has some interesting precedent on this that he appears to not be aware of

-
Sorry I just really care about this topic!!!!!!!
-
Public radio funded a really cool project in Massachusetts to livestream every court proceeding, and ran into constant legal difficulty
-
I think the project wound down, not because of the constant undermining from trial judges/prosecutors/defenders but because no one cared lol
-
That's why it's so cool to see the interest in the Muslim ban arguments
-
I am extremely passionate about this issue, but in the end I have to admit that like 5 people actually want this level of transparency
-
5 normal people and every librarian
-
Now we finally have our ideal example re: public interest!
-
About as much off-topic criticism of Donald Trump as a Portland karaoke night
