Marcy Wheeler (@emptywheel) breaking down the evidence behind the Russian hack, and what's needed to substantiate it https://www.emptywheel.net/2016/12/10/evidence-prove-russian-hack/ …

If you don't want to take the CIA's word for it, then don't (and that's actually the most sensible reaction to anything the CIA says)
-
But take a look at the evidence before you throw it all out as a conspiracy theory. There's independent reporting & public info out there.
-
There are bits of the story that I think are overhyped (like the Russian bots and fake stories)
-
But based on what's known, *entirely aside from what the CIA has to say*, things point to the Russian government going after Clinton
-
Was it *just* Clinton? Was it to make Trump win? The fuck if I know, and the fuck if anyone of us know. But this isn't ~nothing~
-
Did it actually change election results? I think I agree with Marcy here, it seems questionable. But again, it's not nothing.
-
The last bit I want to throw out tonight is that actual intent may be hard to gauge because no one here knows what they're doing
-
Maybe there were just a lot of balls in the air and the Russian government didn't really have a consensus on what outcome they wanted
-
And maybe WikiLeaks was just doing the thing that WikiLeaks does, which is to be a gross Twitter egg that screencaps documents and yells
-
Maybe the RNC emails were hacked but weren't withheld on purpose, it was just a ball in the air that got dropped
-
(Note that Powell's—a Republican—emails came out!)
-
and maybe the RNC emails weren't hacked because someone just neglected to target them, a pure accident of history
-
No matter what the real story is, I still think it's really bad. Sure, maybe it's not some apocalyptic treason plot, but it's still bad.
-
And if you want to just dismiss it all, I'm like, where the fuck do you get off on that?
-
anyways, this has been a <THREAD> from your friendly neighborhood anime take haver
